huronia l

Just when you wonder what could possibly come next in the world of typography, something like this comes along. It’s not just the elegantly curving serif on this L that caught our eye, but the great story behind it.

It was created by Ross Mills of Tiro Typeworks, a foundry that specialises in crafting beautiful typefaces not just in Latin characters, but in scripts for long-neglected languages.

Huronia is available in Latin, Greek, Canadian Syllabics and Cherokee. In fact, Cherokee in Huronia may just be the prettiest thing we’ve ever seen.

The font is in on-going development but the idea of using typography to potentially preserve languages that might otherwise get lost is bordering on design heroism. Particularly as the focus is on looking good as well as being useful. Thanks to Tiro, there’ll be no comic sans in Cherokee, we hope.
